Your Journey Day by Day

Day 01

Kitulgala: Rainforest Welcome

Transfer directly from the airport to Kitulgala, a lush river valley cloaked in wet-zone rainforest and alive with extraordinary birdlife. Your resident expert guide leads an afternoon introductory birding walk along riverine trails where the first endemics begin to reveal themselves. A comprehensive evening briefing on target species and fieldcraft techniques sets the tone.

Day 02

Kelani Valley Forest Reserve & River Rafting

An intensive early-morning birding trek through the Kelani Valley Forest Reserve targets wet-zone endemics: Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Green-billed Coucal, and Serendib Scops Owl. Afternoon white-water rafting on the Kelani River provides a thrilling contrast. A night walk after dinner reveals owls, giant squirrels and fascinating nocturnal reptiles.

Day 03

Sinharaja UNESCO Rainforest

Transfer to Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka’s most precious rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site of global significance. Your afternoon is devoted to guided jungle trekking in search of mixed-species feeding flocks, where dozens of endemic species travel together through the towering forest canopy in extraordinary, unforgettable communal movement.

Day 04

Full-Day Sinharaja Expedition

A full immersive day in the heart of Sri Lanka’s last remaining lowland rainforest. Follow feeding flocks, wade forest streams and photograph macro subjects – endemic lizards, jewel-bright butterflies and amphibians found nowhere else on earth. This is genuine exploration – uneven trails, canopy calls and the thrill of the undiscovered around every bend.

Day 05

Udawalawe Safari

Transfer to the open savannah of Udawalawe National Park, a completely different ecosystem and birdscape from the rainforest. An afternoon jeep safari is excellent for elephants – herds of over 50 are frequently encountered – alongside raptors, open-country birds and crocodiles. The vast tank reservoir attracts spectacular concentrations of waterbirds at dusk.

Day 06

Nuwara Eliya Highlands & Victoria Park

Ascend into the cool highlands and arrive in Nuwara Eliya – Sri Lanka’s highland birding capital. An evening session at Victoria Park targets migratory birds, including the rare Pied Thrush, Indian Blue Robin and Kashmir Flycatcher, which winter here in remarkable numbers. The montane atmosphere is exhilarating and the birdwatching is genuinely world-class.

Day 07

Horton Plains Endemic Hunt

The celebrated Horton Plains plateau offers highland-endemic birding: Yellow-eared Bulbul, Sri Lanka Bush Warbler, Dull-blue Flycatcher. The dramatic hike to World’s End offers sweeping views over the lowlands, while Baker’s Falls crashes below. A visit to Hakgala Botanical Garden adds botanical and ornithological richness to a remarkable day.

Day 08

Kandy & Peradeniya Gardens

A scenic drive to Kandy with a stop at a working tea factory for refreshment and insight into Ceylon tea production. Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, a magnificent 60-hectare estate, offers outstanding open-habitat birding among flowering trees. The evening brings an optional visit to the Temple of the Tooth or a mesmerising Kandyan cultural performance.

Day 09

Udawattakele Forest & Canopy Species

Morning birding in Udawattakele Forest Reserve, a pocket of urban rainforest above Kandy that surprises with forest-interior and canopy species. An important rest afternoon follows – valuable recovery time for those who have endured long-haul travel and multiple early starts. An optional bird-photography critique session with your guide refines your fieldcraft.

Day 10

Departure

A final morning in Kandy before your private transfer back to Bandaranaike International Airport. You depart as a richer birdwatcher – species list extended, ears newly attuned to jungle sounds and eyes permanently altered by the extraordinary colour, movement and diversity of Sri Lanka’s avian world. The island’s birds will call you back.
